Moving abroad from Putney

A rental agreement does not care that the next address is in another country. The notice your tenancy specifies still applies, the check-out still happens, and a joint tenancy still binds everybody who signed it. The border adds a document set on top of all that.

Four routes have their own pages. Anywhere else in western Europe is a question we answer straight.

The four routes with their own pages

On these four we hold clearing agents, know the entry formalities and send vehicles often enough to price them honestly. Each page carries the road out, the regions we deliver into, and a document list divided between the rows you obtain and the rows we obtain.

How a European job runs from SW15

It opens like a move to Southfields: a survey, a measured volume, a written inventory, and a conversation about what the building and the agreement require. What changes is the standing of that inventory, which stops being our working list and becomes a document a border official may read line by line.

The vehicle then works round to the M25 and over to the M20 for the Folkestone shuttle — except on the Irish route, which goes the other way entirely, up the M40 for Holyhead or down the M4 for Pembroke.

The agreement is the fixed point, not the crossing

On a domestic move the hard date is usually a completion. Out of SW15 it is more often a tenancy end — a date fixed months earlier by a document, which does not move and does not care about a ferry timetable or a shared load filling.

So the plan runs from that date outwards. Collect when the agreement says you must be out, hold the goods listed, and ship when the far end and the vehicle both exist. It is the most useful thing this site has to say about international moves.

Collecting beyond Putney

A vehicle heading for a Kent crossing passes much of south London on the way, so second pickups are straightforward. Where a continental run is already in the diary we will take consignments from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Bristol onto the same vehicle. Say where yours starts and we will tell you plainly whether we are the right firm.

Two things we will not put in writing

A transit time before the route, the load and the vehicle arrangement are settled — the honest spread is far too wide for one figure, so the quotation carries an estimated window for your own consignment. And a duty outcome, which turns on residence status and documents, so we set out the conditions rather than imply a result.

Questions about moving abroad

  1. 01

Which countries do you run to?

Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland and Denmark on established routes, each with its own page here. The same vehicles reach France, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden, so ask. Where a destination is not routine for us we say so rather than treat your move as practice.

  2. 02

    Do you ship outside Europe?

No. A container to Melbourne or a crate to Toronto is a different trade with different insurance behind it, and we refer those rather than take the booking and hand it on.

  3. 03

Our tenancy ends before the new place abroad is ready.

Extremely common, and the reason collecting and holding is the normal sequence on these routes. Goods come out on the British date your agreement fixes, are listed, and ship when the far end exists.

  4. 04

We are on a joint tenancy. Does that complicate an international move?

It complicates the UK end rather than the border. The agreement continues until it ends or is formally varied, whatever happens to your furniture, and leaving the country does not change that. Settle it first — and Shelter or Citizens Advice, not us, on how.

  5. 05

Dedicated vehicle or a shared load?

A dedicated vehicle carries your goods alone and departs when you say. A shared load travels with other consignments going the same way: less to pay, leaving when the route fills. Where a tenancy sets a hard British date, holding plus a shared load is usually the best of both.

  6. 06

    Who assembles the paperwork?

We do, from the inventory taken at your Putney property and working with an agent at the destination. The rows we cannot obtain are the ones attached to you as a person — a registration, a tax number, a residence permit. Each country page separates the two.

Where is it going?

The country, the agreement governing the Putney address, and whether the far end is confirmed. Those three decide the vehicle, the route and the file.
